New Orleans, Louisiana - In a tragic incident on Monday evening, a man drowned while swimming in the Mississippi River. The victim has been identified as a local resident, Harold Thomas, 36, who was reportedly intoxicated while swimming in the river near Levee Road.
According to eyewitnesses, Thomas was seen struggling to stay afloat in the river before disappearing under the water. Emergency services were called to the scene immediately, but it was too late. Thomas’s body was recovered by divers a few hours later.
Speaking to our correspondent, Evan Jameson, Detective Jack Thompson of the New Orleans Police Department said, “We can confirm that the victim was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Swimming under the influence of alcohol is extremely dangerous and can result in tragic consequences.”
The victim’s family has been notified of the incident, and his body has been sent for a post-mortem. The police have also urged the public to exercise caution while swimming and to avoid alcohol consumption before swimming.
